A guide for how to fix the exited unexpectedly issue with Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC following Rockstar Games’ latest update.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has just launched on PC and it’s been a broken mess according to various reports about numerous bugs and issues. One of these many issues saw players tearing their hair out over a ‘exited unexpectedly’ dilemma, of which Rockstar Games has attempted to fix through an update to their launcher.

The wild west sequel is Rockstar Games’ magnum opus and its launch on PC was heavily anticipated thanks to its visual improvements, bonus content and the sheer fact it’s one of the best games of the decade. PS4 and Xbox One loyalists have rued its existence for containing an exclusive photo mode, but PC players couldn’t have cared less as they’ve had to wait a year to finally ride with Dutch Van Der Linde’s posse.

Unfortunately, much like many PC games at launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 was unplayable thanks to an ‘exited unexpectedly’ issue. While that was undoubtedly annoying, Rockstar Games has delivered an update to their launcher that hopefully fixes the dilemma.

Rockstar Games releases Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly update

Red Dead Redemption 2 has been plagued by a myriad of bugs and issues on PC following its launch just yesterday, and the most infamous is arguably the ‘exited unexpectedly.’

Game

The developers released a tweet yesterday suggesting that this issue arises from GPUs not being up to date. Because this could still possibly be the case, AMD owners should update their graphics driver to 19.11.11 or higher, meanwhile NVIDIA owners should update to 441.12 or above.

However, away from yesterday’s advice, Rockstar have released an update to their launcher that is intended to resolve the following:

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “The Rockstar Games Launcher failed to initialize” on startup

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher preload decryption getting stuck and not completing

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “The Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly” when launching Red Dead Redemption 2

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in crashes when starting the Rockstar Games Launcher from the Epic Games Launcher

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “Unable to launch game, please verify your game data” when launching Red Dead Redemption 2 from the Epic Games Launcher

In order to resolve these issues, you must of course update the launcher. Simply close Red Dead Redemption 2 or any other Rockstar Game you’re playing, fully exit the launcher and then the update should automatically be applied once you re-open it.
